Duties

Help

This position provides high-quality reference and research assistance, library instruction, and outreach services to NIST scientific, technical, and administrative staff in areas such as physics, biology, chemistry, materials science, engineering, information technology, business and industry news and trends. This librarian will work shifts at the library information desk, conduct in-depth research queries, organize, synthesize, and compile results into a deliverable format that meets the customer's needs, answer ready-reference questions, assist customers in the use of library databases, reference management tools, and provide circulation services as needed.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

A. Successful completion of one full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a Bachelor’s degree.

OR

B. Successful completion of a total of at least five years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

In addition to meeting the basic requirements listed above, applicants must possess one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 (ZA-I at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience conducting reference interviews; excellent customer service skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills. Skills searching scientific/technical/news/business databases (e.g. Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, Compendex, Engineering Village, SciFinder, LexisNexis). Skills using reference manager tools. Skills creating and developing marketing materials and end-user instructional guides.

OR

2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., LL.B. or J.D., related to the position.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above that equates to one year of experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

This position allows you to qualify and be considered based on your education.
