This job opportunity is for a night shift Geography Technician position in the Geography Branch at the National Processing Center (NPC), U.S. Bureau of the Census located in Jeffersonville, Indiana. This position is included in the bargaining unit.

This job opportunity announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies.    

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Perform research and assign geographic location codes to address information using pre-coded Census Bureau developed reference databases and uncoded mapping applications available on the internet.
  • Perform address matching and induplication, conducting research, as needed.
  • Interactively update geographic spatial digital databases with linear features, such as roads, point locations, such as map spots, and/or areas via boundary updates, maintaining positional accuracy.
  • Contact agencies, as specified by operational requirements, to obtain address, boundary, and/or other geographic information.
  • Conduct verification and adjudication, as part of a quality assurance program, and provide feedback.
  • Conduct geographic problem resolution, resolving contradictory information, seeking missing information, and enhancing deficient information.

Tour of Duty: Multiple shifts available.  Alternate Work Schedule (AWS) is not available.

Full time night shift - Mon-Fri, 4:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Part time night shift - Mon-Fri, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience:  You qualify at the grade 05 level if you have one-year of specialized experience that equips you with the skills needed to perform the job duties.  This specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the grade 04 level to meet the qualification requirements in the Federal Service.  Specialized experience is defined as experience performing clerical processing of surveys (statistical or geographical) or clerical coding using established resources.

Education Substitution: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college, university or business, secretarial, or technical school may be substituted for the required experience. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet qualifications.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations, (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  3. A copy of your last performance appraisal including rating; and
  4. Any documentation from your agency that shows your current promotion potential.

ICTAP applicants MUST submit the following documents:

  1. A copy of your Reduction In Force (RIF) separation notice; notice of proposed removal for declining a directed geographic relocation outside of the local commuting area; notice of disability annuity termination; certification from your former agency that it cannot place you after your recovery from a work-related compensable injury; or certification from the National Guard Bureau or Military Department that you are eligible for disability retirement.
  2. A copy of your SF-50 “Notification of Personnel Action”, documenting your RIF separation, noting your position, grade/band level, and duty location, and/or Agency certification of inability to place you through RPL, etc.;
  3. A copy of your latest performance appraisal including your rating; and
  4. Any documentation from your agency that shows your current promotion potential.
