Duties

Help
  • Determines and arranges logistics and resources needed to complete timely layout of timber sales.
  • Communicates guidelines and performance requirements to the timber sale preparation team.
  • Implements silvicultural prescriptions and identifies environmental constraints affecting layout of the proposed project.
  • Verifies logging systems, assesses feasible locations of temporary logging roads, and prepares general logging plans.
  • Oversees delineation of sale and harvest unit boundaries, and determines logical marking and cruising methods.
  • Calculates timber volumes, quality, and cull percentages, and summarizes results.
  • Coordinates with resource specialists, Tribal partners, and timber sale administrators to ensure timber sale preparation and implementation are feasible and meet the intent of the NEPA decision.
  • Coordinates with the FMO and Roads Manager to ensure accurate and timely appraisals of slash treatment and road maintenance costs.
  • Compiles and prepares the sale appraisal and contract packages, and ensures timely contract review.
  • The incumbent performs supervisory duties at least 25% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

FOR GS-08: One year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level. Examples of specialized experience include: Developed and drafted timber cruise plans; Provided field instruction to apprentice cruisers in cruise methods and techniques; Interpreted complex silvicultural prescriptions and marked guides to designate harvest timber; Laid out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and other instruction, considering factors such as the transportation system, topography, fuels management, silvicultural objectives, wildlife needs, stream protection, and cultural resource considerations; Wrote reports describing timber sale resources, and drafting sale area maps; OR two full years (36 semester. 54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (such as: Forest Management, Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory, or Natural Resources Management OR A combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

FOR GS-09: One year of experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level. Examples of specialized experience include: Determined sample cruise design, selected sampling methods, and completed timber sale cruises.; Completed timber sale appraisals to determine value, and prepared timber sale or stewardship contracts; Evaluated logging problems and determined most feasible logging method, considering tractor, skyline or helicopter; Performed timber sale and cut unit boundary layout, considering such factors as accessibility, log-ability, stream protection, visual management, and impacts on other resources utilizing direction provided in the approved environmental document (EA or EIS); Coordinated with resource specialists to ensure mitigations are met, as required in the approved environmental document; OR two full years (36 semester. 54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (such as: Forest Management, Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory, or Natural Resources Management OR A combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
