Summary

This position is with the Pacific Northwest Research Station. The primary purpose of this position is to collect, processes, analyzes, evaluates, and publishes comprehensive information on forestland and other related renewable resources of the United States. Inventory data are widely used by industrial leaders, forest managers, and government agencies in making policy decisions and conducting independent research.

Duties

Help

Works with a team of technicians and professionals to collect natural resources data from field sites and aerial imagery. Assists in locating field sites using aerial
photographs, GPS and topographic maps. Collects a variety of data including forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements according to nationally standardized
protocol and field procedures. The incumbent obtains data on: tree growth and mortality; forest type, stand size and stand age; anthropogenic treatments and/or
natural disturbances; insects and disease; soil attributes; and understory vegetation composition. Assists in protocol interpretation when assessing complex or
unusual situations. Uses resources such as botanical keys or plant association guides to identify plants and site conditions encountered. Records all measurements
utilizing a portable data recorder; completes accurate and concise plot summaries. Independently edits and loads plot data on a regular basis. Actively participates in
the safety program, assisting in identifying hazards and mitigating actions. Travels by vehicle, helicopter, stock, small boat, or other means as necessary to access
field sites. Assists with preparation for field work including reviewing historical plot data, researching and recording ownership information and contacting landowners
and managers.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements.

GS-05: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level.

Specialized Experience is defined as: Collects forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements; Obtains data on: tree growth and mortality; forest type, stand size and stand age; anthropogenic treatments and/or natural disturbances; insects and disease; Records all measurements utilizing a personal data recorder; Uploads and edits field data on a daily basis. -OR

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelors degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses in forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR

A combination of education and experience listed above.

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.

The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.
