Summary

You will perform a variety of tasks in connection with the physical receipt, storage, and issuance of supplies. Monitor and direct all incoming deliveries, the dispatch and consignment of outgoing shipments, and the storage of stock items for issue to Academy departments. You will also perform duties as assigned in the Academy Linen Locker and Mail Room, and other areas under the supervision of the Department of Administrative Services.

Duties

Help

As a Materials Handler, you will:

  • Organize and coordinate receiving operations, storage operations, re-warehousing and consolidation operations.
  • Unload incoming shipments, using common hand tools and different kinds of complex multifunctional materials handling equipment including a fork lift.
  • Annotate and sign receiving and other control documents, verifying items listed match items received.
  • Assist with the sorting, distribution, collection and delivery of Academy mail.
  • Receive, sort, handle soiled linen and prepare for commercial laundry pick up. Maintains perpetual inventory of linen supply.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced materials handler in the receiving, issuing, handling, unpacking, verifying, identifying and noting discrepancies for shipment; storing, inventorying and documenting the movement and storage of supplies according to procedures; load and/or unload materials using forklifts and hand trucks.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • SHIFT WORK: This position requires working on various shifts (day and night) including Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays as necessary.
  • PHYSICAL: Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment medical examination
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves sitting, standing, pushing, lifting and carrying items that weigh up to 8 kilograms (40 pounds).
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is in an office and warehouse setting.  You will work outside in all types of weather to receive shipments. The equipment and tasks involved in this trade frequently require special care to avoid injury.
  • DRIVERS LICENSE: Must possess a current and valid state operator’s motor vehicle license and an acceptable driving record.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

For the Wage Grade 06,  to qualify, you must be have:
 

  • The ability to do the work of a Materials Handler without more than normal supervision such as: handling, storing, preparing and documenting the movement and storage of supplies, equipment and materials; reading and understanding shipping documents; using computer applications to maintain required data; and having operated forklifts and hand trucks.
