Summary

This position is located on the US Dariy Forage Research Center (USDFRC, Cell Wall Biology and Utliization Research Unit, Agriculture Research Service (ARS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), located in Madison, Wisconsin.
This position will serve to support in the research protocols, conduct analysis and procedures and improve scientific understanding in genetic and genomic parameters and performance.

Duties

Help
  • Gathering and analyzing genomics, transcriptomics and epigenomics survey data.
  • Applying molecular wet-lab techniques and sequencing technologies to generate accurate data.
  • Conducting comprehensive statistical and bioinformatics analysis with large scale omics data.
  • Writing and presenting scientific manuscripts and internal reports describing experimental rationale.

Qualifications


Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements:
0401 Series:
A. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

0440 Series:
Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.

  • Evaluation of Graduate education: Genetics, or a curriculum or pattern of training that placed major emphasis on genetics. Graduate study in related fields such as agronomy, horticulture, animal, dairy, or poultry husbandry, entomology, microbiology, plant pathology, chemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and physiology that involved cross-training in genetics is qualifying, provided it placed sufficient emphasis on genetics.
  • Evaluation of Undergraduate education: Courses dealing with genetics, some phase of genetics, or specific techniques that are applied in genetics work are acceptable. This includes courses in genetics, plant or animal genetics, molecular and cellular biology, mathematics and statistics (as they apply to genetics), population dynamics, and certain techniques such as those dealing with irradiation. OR Coursework consisting of an appropriate combination of basic courses in genetics and cytology or statistics are also acceptable.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

GS-09
Qualifying experience for GS-09 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is working experience performing genetic sequencing; performing genetics and genomics research associated with animal genetics in a wet-lab environment; and using computational programs to manipulate research data.

Education: Masters or equivalent graduate degree if related. Related degrees may include genetics, agriculture, or one of the biological sciences with a curriculum path that involved cross-training in genetics; i.e. molecular biology, bioinformatics.

Combination of Graduate Education and Professional Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience.

GS-11
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is working experience performing genetic sequencing; performing genetics and genomics research associated with animal genetics in a wet-lab environment; designing and developing computational programs to manipulate research data; creating protocols and quality procedures; and preparing and presenting scientific documentation for publication and presentation.

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; if related. Related degrees may include genetics, agriculture or one of the biological sciences with a curriculum path that involved cross-training in genetics; i.e. molecular biology, bioinformatics.

Combination of Graduate Education and Professional Experience:
Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience
