Duties

Help

As a ACTUARY at the GS-1510-7/9 some of your typical work assignments may include:

GS-07

  • Following established procedures, making actuarial calculations to be used, for example, in preparing cost estimates of proposed changes in retirement or medical programs.
  • Deriving and applying routine actuarial formulas to obtain rates and values for various plans such as medical and retirement.
  • Conducting supplementary studies of limited scope related to broad studies being conducted by higher-level professional staff.
GS-09
  • Assisting in actuarial studies, analyses, and computations in support of DoD military retirement, survivor, and benefit programs.
  • Investigating specialized areas of actuarial science such as determination of normal costs, amortization schedules, and unfunded liabilities for military post-retirement benefits following general guidelines set by actuarial supervisors.
  • Analyzing actuarial data from military benefits to assure validity, accuracy, and correctness and recommending methods of applying the data to obtain desired results.
  • Assisting in the preparation of special studies involving the calculation of actuarial present values, projections of future flows of funds, or interpretations of laws affecting military fringe benefits.
  • Participating in the preparation of DoD financial statements and assists Chief Actuary in liaisons with DoD Inspector General and U.S. General Accounting Office.
  • The incumbent is expected to attain a knowledge of the data files and computer programs used by the actuarial staff.

Qualifications

You may qualify at the GS-07, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05grade level in the Federal service:

  • Actuarial experience
In addition to meeting qualifications, your application package must reflect the applicable experience to meet the Individual Occupational Requirements for the 1510 series, listed below.

GS-07: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Eligibility under the superior academic achievement provision and a bachelor's degree that included courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science totaling at least 24 semester hours. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.
OR
  • One year of graduate education in the subject areas of actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science; AND a course of educational study as described in paragraph (A) (1) ( a) above.
OR
A combination of education and experience that includes both of the following requirements:
  • One year of actuarial experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level; and
  • Completion of a minimum of 24 semester hours of courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science at a four year college or university equivalent to a course of study described in paragraph (A) (1). This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.
OR

GS-07 Special Alternate Means of Qualifying:
Successful completion of one (1) of the examinations offered by the Society of Actuaries (SOA), or the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), or credit for one of the Joint Board for the Enrollment of Actuaries (JBEA) examinations, as evidenced by an official SOA or CAS transcript. Applicants must complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of courses in actuarial science, mathematics, relevant statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science at a four year college or university. This course work must have included a minimum of 12 semester hours of mathematics that included differential and integral calculus and one or more courses in mathematics for which these calculus courses were prerequisites.

You may qualify at the GS-09, if you fulfill the following qualifications:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the federal service:
  • Actuarial experience
In addition to meeting qualifications, your application must reflect the applicable experience to meet the Individual Occupational Requirements for the 1510 series, listed below:

GS-09: Applicants may qualify for this grade level by meeting one of the following requirements:
  • A master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree in actuarial science; mathematics, statistics, business, finance, economics, insurance, or computer science; AND a course of educational study as described in paragraph (A) (1) (a) above.
OR
  • A combination of education and experience that includes both of the following requirements:
  1. One year of actuarial experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level
  2. A course of educational study as described in paragraph (A) (1) above

OR

GS-09 - Special Alternate Means of Qualifying:

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
