Duties

Help
  • Gathers, develops, and checks the accuracy of information through interviews with ARS scientists, industry stakeholders, subject-matter specialists, and policymakers for dissemination to ARS and industry stakeholders, popular press.
  • Writes articles or assists scientists with writing articles, for industry-based popular press magazines and news services.
  • Plans and prepares printed and web-based materials to inform the public about the scope and impact of US Meat Animal Research Center (USMARC) Agricultural Research Service (ARS).
  • Develops contemporary communication and outreach materials for outreach and stakeholder education including videos, interactive presentations, internet based outreach, scientist/research profiles.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Specialized Experience GS-7: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience is fulfilled by the following: Working with personal computers and software packages to prepare reports, presentations, spreadsheets, and graphic displays; communicating effectively with diverse audience including scientist, producers, administrators, and general public.

Or Education: One full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement. The superior academic achievement provision is applicable to all occupations covered by this standard. See the "General Policies and Instructions" for specific guidance on applying the superior academic achievement provision.

Specialized Experience GS-9: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience is fulfilled by the following: Applying knowledge of information systems, media relations, information packaging and dissemination, and information marketing strategies; Developing written information materials for dissemination through a variety of media

Or Education: master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

Combining Education and Experience: Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the grade levels specified in the table, and may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify an applicant for that grade level. Only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be used to qualify applicants for positions at grades GS-9 and GS-11. (When crediting education that requires specific course work, prorate the number of hours of related courses required as a proportion of the total education to be used.)

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The work is primarily sedentary in nature, but may involve occasional walking, standing, bending, or carrying light items such as reports or files. There are moderate physical demands associated with carrying and assembling exhibits and displays at local and offsite locations.
