Summary

This position is located in the Schuyler Otis Bland Memorial Library, United States Merchant Marine Academy, Maritime Administration (MARAD).

This position is established to provide curricular support, general and specialized reference service, circulation, and other professional duties and responsibilities. The Library is an academic library with a wide variety of materials in a broad complex of subjects and specialized collections in technical areas.

Duties

Help

As a Librarian, you will:

  • Provide assistance to both professional and technical personnel and provide assistance in their fulfillment of reference requests in a variety of subject areas ranging from military/naval history to the fine arts.
  • Oversee the circulation desk in the absence of the Reader Services Librarian ensuring smooth operation of all functions, including the use of the automated library system to charge/discharge materials and reserve items.
  • Conduct orientation detailing services and resources available within the library and the community. Design and deliver information literacy instruction to individuals and groups.
  • Identify electronic resources, including but not limited to databases, electronic journals, and e-books for consideration, establish product trials for evaluation, apply license and contract terms related to electronic resources, and collaborate with technical Services in the negotiation of resources.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging issues, trends, standards, and technologies in the management of librarianship, licensed electronic resources, the Library’s management and discovery systems. Understand how these can impact resources and services.

This position is perfect for a mid-career professional with a customer service oriented approach, who is looking for an opportunity to assist college age students in an academic library.

The working schedule for the position will be:

- While classes are in session: Sundays 1400-2300, Mondays 1530-2300, and 3 more days 0800-1630.
- While classes are not in session: Monday - Friday 0800-1630

Qualifications

In addition to meeting the basic series entry qualification requirements, applicants must meet the education and/or experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration:

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-09 on Experience, you must have one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-07, it must include:

  • Experience providing a range of reference and research services in a variety of subject areas to meet the needs of patrons.
  • Experience identifying electronic resources, including but not limited to databases, electronic journals, and e-books for consideration, establishes product trials for evaluation, applies license and contract terms related to electronic resources.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-09 on Education:

  • 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's in library science or equivalent graduate degree, e.g., L.L.B. or J.D., related to the position.

You can also qualify based on a combination of education and experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Students enrolled in a qualifying degree program can apply if the anticipated graduation date is within six months of closing date of the announcement. Graduation transcript must be received before start date.

Education

BASIC SERIES ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS: 

A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;
or
B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.
