Summary

This position is located in the Admissions Office of the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, New York, a four-year, fully accredited, degree granting institution of higher education where approximately 950 young men and women are trained for careers as officers and leaders inthe U.S. Merchant Marine and maritime industry, and for service as officers in the U.S. armed forces. You will serve as a Recruitment Specialist for the USMMA national recruitment program.

Duties

Help

As a Recruitment Specialist, you will:

  • Develop, plan, organize, and execute a nationwide recruitment program at the Academy.
  • Develop a national recruitment network with organizations to ensure accomplishment of recruitment strategies, policies and procedures of those program objectives that are in accordance with regulations.
  • Provide guidance and exceptional customer service to applicants throughout the application and enrollment process.
  • Review and evaluate applicant files to determine qualification and suitability for admission to the Academy.
  • Make recruiting presentations at selected high schools, Congressional Academy Days and other forums to stimulate interest in the Academy explaining the academic programs, standards, and admissions procedures in addition to explaining about the maritime industry, the Merchant Marines and career opportunities.
  • Work proactively with centers of influence and Academy stakeholders to increase the number of qualified female and minority applicants within assigned region.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a professional with proven experience performing recruitment related duties for a national recruitment program at a college or university.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.

  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements. 
 
To qualify on for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09, it must include:

  • Experience applying a range of recruitment concepts, practices regulations, precedents and procedures for college level recruiting programs and admissions operations/requirements.
  • Experience with current trends in higher education and how they impact on the recruitment, enrollment and retention of college students.
  • Experience resolving problems encountered by college students, including use of Financial Aid Programs.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Education alone, you must have:

  • 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

You can also qualify based on a combination of higher level graduate education and experience.  This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application.  

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
