Duties

Help

As a Physical Scientist with the Geoscience and Environmental Change Science Center, some of your duties will involve the following:

-Management of the Earth System Biogeochemistry Laboratory, which includes design and oversite of laboratory experiments; preparation and analyses of environmental samples including gases, liquids, and solids; operation and maintenance of complex scientific equipment such as elemental analyzers and gas chromatographs; development of laboratory standard operating procedures, organization and quality assurance of laboratory based data.

-Coordination of complex field studies, including collection of environmental samples and highly technical physical and chemical data, soil description and classification, installation and maintenance of environmental sensors and dataloggers, and oversight of field-based experiments.

-Application of numerical models and statistical methods for analysis and interpretation of environmental data using programming and scripting languages including R, Python, and Matlab.

-Using Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) to assemble and analyze geospatial data in order to develop new maps of soil properties and to aid in the identification of suitable field sites.

-Operates a motor vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Field work occurs under a variety of harsh environmental conditions over multiple days, in order to collect samples and field data.  May require considerable walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting.  Field site access may require hiking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces; climbing/descending steep slopes; or crossing moving water.

Qualifications

  • In addition to the basic education requirements, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include:  conducting scientific investigations of soil biogeochemistry; planning, coordinating, and executing scientific investigations that include:  (1) laboratory processing of environmental samples, particularly soils, and data collection; (2) developing numerical models or using statistical methods for analysis of field and laboratory data, particularly with code based statistical analyses or computer programming (Python/Matlab/R); (3) experience with geospatial analyses or mapping using Arc GIS or comparable software to identify or map soils.

  • You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Education
