About the Position:
The New Orleans District provides for navigation, flood and hurricane protection, environmental stewardship, and other water resources needs to benefit the people of southern Louisiana and the nation. The offices are located in modern energy efficient buildings in the uptown area of New Orleans overlooking the Mississippi River. There is a child care center and a fitness center on the premises, and free employee parking. Audubon Park is within walking distance.

Duties

Help

Works on various types of assignments throughout the district, such as: land clearing, levee construction, levee shaping, placing riprap, surfacing roads or levee crowns, loading dump trucks and pumping water from construction sites. Operates various types of equipment such as tractors (e.g., rubber tired or crawler),backhoe, road graders, mowing machines, trucks, winches, dozers etc.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. This is defined as the ability to operate heavy equipment to safely push or load materials and perform basic maintenance on such equipment.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order)
  • Physical Effort: Exerts heavy effort in manipulating various levers, clutches and brakes. Is subject to strain caused by equipment vibrations and from jerking and jolting motions from moving equipment. Occasionally moves objects such as cables, tools and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Must change the position of attachments more often and rapidly to adjust to changing conditions of the surface; and control changes to maneuver equipment around obstructions. Must have the coordination and dexterity to operate hand and foot controls on all equipment described.

  • Working Conditions: Work is performed outside in all types of weather and on irregular terrain (flat, hilly, on slopes of levees and canals, rough, infirm, swampy, or densely wooded areas). May work in partially enclosed cabs of moving equipment. And is subject to noise, dust, dirt, fumes from engines and exhaust, tipping or overturning the vehicle, and falling timbers when working in wooded areas.
