Summary


The employee in this position serves as a Fish Biologist for the Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery. Primary duties include the production of warm water native fish species, primarily bonytail and razorback sucker for recovery program in the Colorado River basin. The Fish Biologist works cooperatively with Native American tribes, research institutions, state, local, and Federal cooperators.

Duties

Help


The duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Planning and performing a variety of operational tasks and applying culture techniques and procedures for production of warm water threatened and endangered fish
  • Monitoring water quality and collecting data for management evaluation of product and fish culture technique
  • Recording data and maintaining written records of fish production, tagging and distribution, and other work completed
  • Assisting in spawning, rearing, harvesting and inventory of fish
  • Ensuring proper maintenance of grounds, buildings, and hatchery equipment

Physical Demands: The work requires considerable physical exertion when walking over wet, muddy, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting (feed, fertilizer, etc), seining (up to 100 feet), and netting. The work requires agility and dexterity in a harsh desert environment where temperatures may routinely and consistently exceed 100 F.

Work Environment: Work is primarily outdoors. Temperature and weather extremes are encountered in outdoor work. The employee is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Minimum Qualification

Possess a Bachelor's Degree with a major in a biological science that includes the following course work: 1) at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; AND 2) at least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences subjects such as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects; NOTE: If you select this response, you will be required to provide a copy of your official college transcripts to show how you meet this requirement, OR

Possess a combination of education and experience that is equivalent to a major in a biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours) of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences as described in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Additional Qualification

Possess at least one year of specialized experience which is equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal government. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: feeding fish, inventory stock, distribute fish in ponds, tanks, and raceways, maintain hatchery equipment, prepare preliminary data analysis and compile and extract information for field reports, monitor water quality, observe fish health and assist in spawning, egg incubation and fish rearing, OR

Completion of one full year graduate education in an accredited college or university in a field directly related to fishery biology such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, fish and wildlife management, marine science, or other fields directly related to fishery biology, OR

Meet one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement (To meet the requirements for the Superior Academic Achievement provision, you must have: graduated with an overall GPA of at least 2.95; OR, graduated with at least a 3.45 GPA in your major or during the last two years of college; OR, graduated in the top third of your class; OR, was a member of a national scholastic honor society recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies), OR

Possess an equivalent combination of professional experience and graduate level education which together equals 100% of the requirements.

Promotion Potential: This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed represent the full performance level of GS-0482-09. At lower grade levels, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-0482-09. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.The selectee may be promoted without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

  1. As an advanced trainee, professional knowledge of the theory, principles, and methods of fish/aquatic biology, with emphasis on imperiled aquatic species production and distribution programs.
  2. General knowledge of professional concepts, principles, practices and methodologies utilized in the field of fishery biology and fishery management programs in order to analyze fish health and ensure that proper rearing practices are followed
  3. Ability to perform duties involving several phases of hatchery management, e.g., disinfection, water quality monitoring, collecting data for management evaluation, computing and recording conversion dates and other dietary/growth information, applying chemicals, observing and reporting results of treatment, preparing animals for shipment or distribution, etc.
  4. Working knowledge of fish production techniques and methodologies utilized in the production of a variety of game and imperiled non-game species; fish physiology; fish health management; fish pathology; fish behavior; fisheries biology; and fisheries and wildlife management to provide technical assistance and coordination within the Service and to outside entities, including states, and non-government organizations.
  5. Knowledge of diverse production requirements of a hatchery involved in fish production that requires significant flexibility in adapting culture practices to replicate natural habitat and life history conditions.
  6. Knowledge in implementing and managing cold-, cool-, and/or warm water fish production and distribution programs utilizing intensive as well as extensive culture methods to produce various species of fish and other aquatic species.
  7. Skill in oral and written communication to convey information about the federal fisheries program; ability to present clear and concise data on hatchery operations, and communicate accurate information to interested groups, and state and local partners.
