  • Identifies the underlying biochemical, molecular and physiological mechanisms in wheat that are associated with low falling numbers (FN), including preharvest sprouting and late maturity alpha-amylase
  • Characterizes the protein biochemistry of alpha-amylase and other hydrolytic enzymes expressed during wheat grain development and germination that negatively impact FN test values and end-use quality
  • Develops high throughput assays, such as enzyme and ELISA assays, that will predict FN test values and flour functionality
  • Develops technologies to distinguish between the two causes of low FN, late maturity alpha-amylase and preharvest sprouting
  • Collaborates with breeders in incorporate tolerance to low falling numbers into wheat
