Duties

Help

As a Research Ecologist within the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Designing and conducting original research investigations directed towards gaining a better understanding of processes that drive wetland ecosystems with a focus on land-use and climate-change influences.
  • Addressing complex issues within the area of expertise and maintaining liason with employees of Federal and State governments, academic institutions, and private organizations that share interests in wetland ecosystems and the social services they provide.
  • Developing methodologies that facilitate the synthesis of information and utilization of knowledge gained.
  • independently producing and collaboratively publishing manuscripts, technical reports, other information-transfer products, and invited and contributed presentations at professional meetings and workshops.
  • Operating a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:

Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. 

Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) designing, developing and conducting protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data; 2) sampling, analyzing data, and developing systems models relative to wetlands ecology; 3) independently planning and conducting comprehensive biological studies/investigations and developing research proposals; 4) modifying and adapting standard biological, wetland-ecology, and systems-modeling techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on wetlands related issues; 6) designing and managing projects and studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental perturbations on wetlands.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.  
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements.
