Duties

Help
  • You will be responsible for ensuring the efficacy of sanitation processes, as well as water, feed and bedding quality.
  • You will be responsible for scheduling and providing oversight of vivarium equipment maintenance and addressing emergency maintenance issues.
  • You will provide training to ensure equipment is operated and maintained in accordance with manufacturer?s guidelines, applicable policies and standard operating procedures.
  • You will review animal welfare laws and policies for application to animal husbandry, production, and research methods within the facility.
  • You will be responsible for ensuring supplies and services basic to animal resources are ordered.
  • You will be responsible for writing Statements of Work, Minimum Essential Characteristics, and other criteria associated with Department of Defense contracting.
  • You will be performing animal rounds to supplement the primary veterinary technical staff.
  • You will participate in protocol planning meetings to provide input on facility, equipment and husbandry aspects of protocol support.
  • You will assist in developing and ensure execution of the facility?s quality assurance/quality control program.

  • Appointment requires an Occupational Health Examination.
  • Appointment requires employee to obtain and maintain a Certified Manager for Animal Resources (CMAR) Certification and Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) Certification within two (2) years of employment.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes1) applying animal welfare laws and policies for application to animal husbandry, production, and/or research methods within an animal vivarium; 2) evaluating husbandry practices to establish procedures required to maintain high standards of animal husbandry for diverse populations; AND 3) ensuring that procedures, animal housing, and equipment comply with applicable Food and Drug Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and Good Laboratory Practice regulations to support non-clinical animal studies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in engineering, industrial arts, property management, or business administration.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
