Help

As a Supervisory Interdisciplinary General Engineer or Physical Scientist duties for positions in the 0801/1301 series may include any of the following:

Duties will vary depending on the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy(EERE) Selecting Office. 

  1. Directs the program planning and scheduling, and implementation of an assigned research and development program.  

  2. Represents the Program Manager/supervisor as a principal speaker or discussion member in a wide variety of workshops, seminars, and conferences involving governmental officials, trade and professional associations, industry representatives, and interest groups to communicate the program objectives, benefits, and offerings.
  3. Performs duties that span the full scope of the Office mission and activities, including planning, budgeting, developing, implementing, managing, and evaluating initiatives. Provides substantive input budget formulation and justification, as well as budget execution for assigned program area.

This position may be filled in multiple areas:

Geothermal Technologies Office- Washington, DC  (GS 15 - $137,839-$166,500) OR Golden, Colorado  (GS 15 - $134,629-$166,500)

Basic Qualification Requirements for all General Physical Science Positions: Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; or a combination of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Qualifications

At THE GS-15 LEVEL

GS-15: In addition to the basic education requirements.

Specialized experience:  At the GS-15 level have experience utilizing concepts, principles, and practices involving several scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, hydrology, geology, engineering, soil conservation or environmental engineering applicable to a full range of duties concerned with the resolution of problems associated with assigned program(s), and implementation of and compliance with Federal, state and local policies, directives, regulations, and statutes.

  1. Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of project management in order to plan projects, including the review of technical evaluations, PMPs, project milestones, and risk planning documentation. 

  2. Knowledge of procurement (acquisition and financial assistance) policies, practices and procedures in order to: serve as contracting officers representative (COR) and initiate and oversee the planning of new Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs); develop FOA requirement documents; plan informational workshops; organize merit reviews; brief selection officials; and collaborate with Program Managers (PMs) and TPOs on all facets of FOA planning.   

  3. Ability to apply new technical/scientific developments or fundamental technical/scientific theories to problems not readily explained by existing methods in order to further advance and develop state-of-the-art technologies in Program area.  

  4. Skill to communicate, orally and in writing, diverse technical and administrative aspects of complex projects, to reach reasonable conclusions as to required actions, and to present these issues with proposed actions clearly and concisely.   

  5. Knowledge and skill to serve as a supporting team member and as a member of panels, work groups, and conferences and to present in-depth technical briefings at all levels on a variety of issues relative to the assigned programs.

A. Degree in Engineering - To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of Education and Experience - College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:


For the GS-0801, General Engineer, you must possess the following Basic Requirements:
