Help

Nuclear Medicine Service is recruiting for an energetic "team-minded" Lead Medical Support Assistant. The candidate will join the administrative, technologist, and physician staff in providing timely, quality, and veteran centric services. Nuclear Medicine Service provides diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, has state of the art imaging equipment, and operates in a fast-paced yet very collegial work setting.

The Lead Medical Support Assistant duties include, but is not limited to:

  • Reporting backlogs, difficulties in meeting deadlines or difficulty in securing information from clinicians or the patient record.
  • Routinely communicates with physicians, technologists and other allied health professionals on complex cases using sound interpersonal skills and is constantly aware of the sensitive information.
  • Working independently making decisions based on guidelines, precedents and regulations and performs duties in such a manner that only minimal supervision is required.
  • Assisting in scheduling patients, reception of patients and visitors, collection of data, reviews and monitors to improve services to Veterans and staff, maintaining a high standard of healthcare activities.
  • Adhering to changes in laws and regulations which affect Veteran's medical benefit entitlements, as well as advise Veterans of changes in laws and regulations, as appropriate.
  • Maintaining contact with clinical and clerical staff in the work area to help resolve day to day problems relating to delays or misunderstandings.
  • Organizing work, setting priorities and delegating tasks when necessary to meet set deadlines and scheduling directives.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Specialized Experience: You must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service to qualify for GS-07 level. Specialized experience is defined as experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Lead Medical Support Assistant.

Examples of GS-6 specialized experience include, but are not limited to:
  • Scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient's appointments and/or consults.
  • Monitoring a patient scheduling electronic wait list and preparing for clinic visits.
  • Monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility.
  • Verifying and updating demographics and insurance information.
  • Processing emergency and non-emergency transfers to other hospitals.
  • Performing basic eligibility, establishing clinic profiles, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage.
  • Working collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model such as Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) or other specialty care setting where the PACT model is used such as oncology, HIV, SCI, Military Sexual Trauma.
  • Coordinating with the patient care team to review the clinical utilization by using various reports.
  • Ensuring clinical setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic and make necessary adjustments.
  • Developing effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA Medical Centers, and other agencies.
  • Participating in team huddles and team meetings to manage and plan patient care.
  • Setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of work to meet team and patient needs.
  • Working with the team to reinforce the plan of care and entering appropriate information into the electronic record.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07.

Physical Requirements: Applicant must possess the ability to do light lifting, under 15 pounds, and have use of fingers.
