The incumbent is responsible for the mechanical maintenance and repair of heavy trucks and heavy road construction and/or maintenance equipment.  Equipment includes motor patrol graders, bulldozers, wheeled tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, rollers, heavy-duty compressors, generators, trucks, etc.  Adjust, repair, and/or replace differentials, clutches, transfer cases, power take-offs, front and rear trans-axle assemblies, steering and hydraulic braking systems in potentially adverse field conditions.  Dissassemble, repair and reassemble electrical system components.  Use specialized diagnostic equipment to diagnose problems.

Physical Demands: Duties require that work be performed in positions that involve, standing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, and lying down. Manual dexterity is necessary when disassembling, repairing, and reassembling units. Continuous physical effort is exerted when lifting, pushing, and pulling on wrenches and heavy assemblies. Visual and auditory senses are relied upon to coordinate the diagnosis of mechanical failures and the resulting equipment repair.

Work Environment: Work generally is performed under cover of a garage which is warm in summer and under heated in winter. Frequent travel to remote field locations is necessary to perform repairs on inoperable equipment, where tasks are conducted outside in inclement winter weather or the dry heat of summer. Carbon monoxide fumes are always present requiring constant alertness. Dirty, greasy conditions prevail because of the nature of the work.
