The Oncology Physician is assigned to the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS) in Medical Service, and is under the direct supervision of the Chief, Medical Service. The incumbent will be providing comprehensive, efficient, compassionate, high quality healthcare to all patients, functioning as a member of the inter-disciplinary team providing clinical care to the inpatients at VASNHCS.

Duties

Help

Duties include but are not limited to:

Providing medical evaluation and directing overall management of patients in collaboration with other members of health care team. Supervision and education of Internal Medicine Residents and medical students from University of Nevada, School of Medicine, is required.

Functions/Scope

  • Participate in an effective clinical program with attention to patient outcome indicators.
  • Practice within the scope of assigned privileges.
  • Comply with the bylaws, rules and regulations of the facility and agency.
  • Meet medical staff criteria for initial appointment and reappointment, including ongoing CME.
Administrative
  • Comply with prescribed record keeping practices in accordance with the rules, regulations and bylaws.
  • Comply with prescribed information security policy and procedures.
  • Interpersonal relationships - works effectively with patients, families, staff, coworkers and other health care professionals.
  • Participates in Medical Service educational activities and scheduled meetings.
  • Participates in research activities with regard to the subspecialty of Internal Medicine, as assigned.
  • Comply with assigned Peer Reviews and maintaining quality assurance standards.

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized.
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursing program. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility requirement and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board certified or eligible in Internal Medicine.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: In the process of providing patient care, the work involves regular and recurring periods of walking, standing, sitting, bending, pulling, lifting, reaching and carrying. Manual dexterity is required to operate medical equipment and perform activities such as surgery, treatments and computerized medical record documentation.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
