As a Research Geologist within the Volcano Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The incumbent must be able to safely conduct geologic field studies in a variety of conditions in Hawai'i and elsewhere where fieldwork may occur. At times, the work will be near or on an erupting volcano with exposures to active lava, volcanic gas, and other hazards. The terrain, including mountainous and tropical environments, sometimes carrying heavy loads of 40 pounds or more. Field work will require travel by vehicle and helicopter.

Qualifications:
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-12:
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed above, applicants must meet A, B or C for GS-12 grade level research positions:
A. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in Geology or an appropriate field of study that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work, OR
B. At least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level, that is in or related to the duties described above, such as conducting and publishing research in volcanology using field-based geologic investigations, modelling, and/or relevant geochemical and petrologic studies and data. Such work must have shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research. The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of research that provide the means of exploring the application of science in a major field. OR
C. Combination of successfully completed graduate level education beyond the second year of study in an appropriate field of study and appropriate specialized experience, as described above.
For GS-13:
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed above, applicants for the GS-13 grade level must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level that is in or related to the duties described above, such as: a demonstrated leadership role in planning, conducting and publishing research in volcanology using field-based geologic investigations, modelling, and/or relevant geochemical and petrologic studies and data. This experience is typically performed at the post-doctorate level. Such work must have shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research. The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of research that provide the means of exploring the application of science in a major field.

1: Ability to plan and conduct field studies and publish results related to research on the stratigraphy and structure, eruptive history and processes, and geochemical and geologic evolution of volcanoes. 2: Ability to obtain, interpret, and synthesize geochemical and geochronological data on volcanic products to address questions related to processes of magma generation, storage, movement, and eruption, and how these processes can be used to assess the timing and impact of eruption hazards.
3: Ability to study eruptive processes and products using field-based investigations or modelling to advance understanding of volcanoes and volcano hazards. Please describe your experience with this type of work and the impact of your results.
4: Ability to conduct research that incorporates results from other disciplines (for example, gas geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing) to better understand complex processes related to volcanism.
5: Ability to communicate results of scientific investigations to project personnel, scientific researchers, the public and government officials. A) Please list and describe your level of experience in presenting research results and technical materials to technical and non-technical audiences; consider both oral and written forms of communication and teaching experience, including some specific examples of presentations that you think had an impact on your audience. B) Please describe the venue in which your presentations were given and the nature of your audience.
