The Mountain Home VA Medical Center is currently seeking a board certified, experienced, qualified Geriatrics trained physician. The candidate will primarily provide ambulatory Geriatric care services and focus on our Geriatric-Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) care delivery, program development, quality assurance and performance improvement as well as our Geriatric Problem-Focused and Memory Care Clinic. Incumbent will also participate in other Geriatric programs as needed such as Nursing Home, Tele-Health, and Home Care. Supervision of Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants is required. The individual is expected to collaborate with the Associate Chief of Staff maintaining quality assurance activities. The incumbent must be able to work collaboratively with other health care disciplines.

Service duties will include, but are not limited to: Provide quality patient care in our Geriatric clinics; Serve as a key clinical resource for matters involving Geriatric services; Provides comprehensive care for our Veteran population includes diagnosis and treatment of assigned patients; Provides effective medical treatment, consultation, and diagnosis upon request from other Services/Departments; Orders lab tests, x-rays, EKG's and other diagnostic procedures; Initiates or expedites requests for consults, special tests, or studies; Assess Veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment skills; Identifying acute and/or chronic health problems; Assess and manage geriatric syndromes such as falls, gait and balance disorders, failure to thrive, incontinence, memory loss, including dementia, polypharmacy, depression, osteoporosis and sleep disturbance. Coordinates with pharmacy for medication reconciliation, and polypharmacy redirection; Provide occasional backup to other Extended Care (EC) providers as needed; Participates in weekend CLC coverage and call, in rotation with other EC providers; and, Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Full-time includes a 40 hour work week, typically 7:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Hours and days could vary, including the potential for alternate tours.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/31/2019.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • License and Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training Requirement: Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience: Board Certification/Eligibility in Geriatrics.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Physicians should be physically and mentally capable to perform the examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan, and educate residents. Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeating bending. They should be emotionally and mentally stable and capable of performing the duties of the position.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
