Qualifications
Basic Requirements for a Statistician (1530):
You must possess a degree that includes 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. (Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements can be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.)
OR
You must possess have a combination of education and experience where courses above plus appropriate experience or additional education. You experience must include a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
Basic Requirements for a Mathematical Statistician (1529):
You must possess a degree that includes 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
OR
You must possess a combination of education and experience with at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics.
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, applicants must meet the following criteria to qualify for the GS-13 grade level. Possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. This specialized experience must include programming skills in one of the following statistical and data science software languages: SAS, R, Python, STATA, SPSS, SQL, MATLAB or equivalent and experience with statistical models such as regression and/or unsupervised learning. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts to support the positive education requirement).
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade level (or equivalent).
Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP). The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
