Help

The Academic Research Division (ARD) at the US Military Academy manages research efforts to enhance the quality of the cadet educational experience, promote the professional development of the faculty, address important issues facing the Army and the Nation, and to enhance the reputation of the United States Military Academy. As the Associate Dean for Research the incumbent will hold a faculty appointment, run Academic Research Division (ARD), and teach one section per year in one of the Academic Departments.

The selected candidate is expected to:

  • Work with the Chief of Faculty Development and Vice Deans to implement academy research program objectives.
  • Inform Academy leadership on the makeup of Academy research partners (Army, Defense, Interagency, academic, and private sector).
  • Manage the flow of research grants, Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), technology transfer actions, and contracts with U.S. government agencies, academic institutions, and private entities, which may include ongoing interface with electronic business / management systems and financial monitoring (e.g., financial distributions and expenses associated with grants).
  • Provide expert analysis and advice on complex procedural and administrative issues pertaining to grants and contracts administration, interfacing closely with the Academy's management staff, faculty, and finance team.
  • Engage with the Academy Research Council and research center directors to ensure that policy and procedures are effectively implemented, inclusive of pre- and post-award operations.
  • Oversee the Dean's Research Operations Compliance Program, including training and education programs.
  • Assist with research capacity building efforts, including providing administrative recommendations and providing investigators and departments with research capacity strategies and support.
  • Institute faculty development and training programs to address faculty research needs as they arise.
  • Supervise a support staff of 2 employees.

This is a full-time, term appointment in the excepted service, not to exceed 3 years. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement dental and vision. You will be eligible to earn annual leave and sick leave.

Qualification Requirements:
Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional coursework that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

Selective Placement Factors/Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSA's): Applicants will be evaluated on the following: 1) Academic accomplishment (advanced degree such as Ph.D. ,Ed.D., or other terminal degree preferred) related to a discipline taught at the United States Military Academy; 2) Knowledge of research operations, compliance issues, polices, regulations, and precedents applicable to sponsored grants administration; 3) Experience in research collaboration with U.S. Government agencies, academic institutions, and private sector entities; 4) Ability to provide direction and guidance to subordinates and peers; and 5) Ability to teach undergraduate courses.
