Duties

Help

The incumbent serves as an Archeologist in the Vale District Office.  The incumbent performs professional work in heritage resource management within the framework of BLM's multiple use mission.  The incumbent applies a professional knowledge of standard archeological principles, theories, concepts, methods, and techniques to perform recurring, well-precedented projects.  Major duties include:  curation, archeological inventories, consultation, heritage resources management, heritage and paleontological resources environmental analysis and planning documents, education and outreach, and geographic information systems (GIS). 

Physical Demands:  Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples.

Work Environment: The work regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts which may require special safety precautions, e.g., adverse weather conditions, hazardous driving conditions, irritating or occasionally hazardous chemicals; hostile wildlife; and travel in off-road vehicles. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification:  This position has a positive education requirement.  You must have a bachelor's degree with 3 semester hours in each of the following: history of archeology, archeology of a major geographical area, regional archeology, theory and methods, plus 6 semester hours in related courses, i.e. geography, geology, history, environmental studies, surveying, scientific writing, and Archeological Field School.  

In addition to the basic requirements, to qualify for the GS-09 requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-07 in the federal service OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

Specialized Experience Requirements:   In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.   Examples for the GS-09 are:  Participate in conducting cultural resource inventories, assist with conducting site testing or excavation, draft reports and studies for review and approval by a supervisor or other specialist.  Review routine plans and projects.  

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.  Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604.  If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

You will need to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.

The Bureau of Land Management has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

1) Knowledge of the requirements of federal and state laws and regulations relating to heritage resources.   

2) Knowledge of the principles, concepts, theories, and methods of archeology, cultural resource management, ethno-history and history.   

3) Knowledge of geospatial technologies such as GPS, GIS and the use of computer systems to perform day-to-day tasks and to record and retrieve data. 

4) Ability to communicate effectively.
