Duties

Help
  • Duties listed are at the full performance level.
  • Perform chemical analyses and tests using established and recently developed analytical techniques on water, air, soil, or sediment samples
  • Select established methods or modify procedures to carry out chemical analyses and tests.
  • Detect the presence of organic priority pollutants
  • Write laboratory reports identifying a sample and stating the methods and procedures used for analysis, any modifications of the method including validity data, and the results.
  • Analyze water and air samples to detect chemical and nutrient pollutants
  • Test, evaluate, diagnose and repair chemistry related laboratory equipment.
  • Train technicians and less experienced chemists to conduct routine procedures and operate and maintain instrumentation.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:


Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
--OR--
Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related graduate level education in the amounts listed below.

For the GS-9 Level:

-Calibrating and operating chemistry-specific analytical instruments associated with air or vegetation analysis such as gas chromatography, dry combustion C and N analysis, and gas sensors
-Performing standard chemistry laboratory procedures.
-Testing newly developed methods for the use of chemical instrumentation and associated software.
OR
Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. directly related to the work of the position in areas such as environmental analysis as a chemist, research chemistry, and analytical chemistry.
OR
A combination of specialized experience and graduate education described above. Only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

For the GS-11 level:
-Calibrating, operating, and troubleshooting and repairing chemistry-specific analytical instruments associated with air, emissions, vegetation analysis such as such as gas chromatography, vegetation organic carbon and total nitrogen analysis, gas sensors
-Performing standard and non-standard chemistry laboratory procedures.
-Modifying and developing new methods for use of chemical instrumentation to obtain valid and accurate results; AND
-Using a computer software specific to statistical analysis and chemistry-related scientific instrumentation and analysis.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
