Summary

In this role, Nursing Assistant functions as a member of the nursing care team and assists higher graded CNAs, licensed nursing staff, and other members of the care team in the care of patients/residents receiving outpatient care, home or community living care, or other patients who are in acute, sub-acute, or chronic states of illness. The NA in this role provides care under close supervision and refers issues/questions to supervisors, higher graded CNAs, or other healthcare professionals.

Duties

Help

The duties and responsibilities of the Nursing Assistant include but are not limited to the following:
Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychological, educational, safety and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patient served in his/her assigned area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care might be gained through education, training or experience in NA arena. Provides input to Team Leader/Charge Nurse for making assignments prior to receiving report at the start of scheduled tour. Listens attentively to report, notes pertinent items and asks for clarification when unsure of content. Formulates work schedule based on prioritization of patient care needs. Assist patients to keep physically and socially active and to maintain peer group interactions. Assist patients to cope with loss, e.g. hearing, vision, body parts or death of significant others. Assist patients with self-care as required, and with maintaining as much independence as possible. Performs procedures and treatments according to the orientation procedures for assigned patients, or assists with delivery of procedures/treatments for a team of patients, in an organized and timely manner in accordance with established policy and procedure seeking guidance when necessary. Preserves patient safety, confidentiality, respects patient/family/significant other's rights and assists the multidisciplinary team with resolving ethical issues. Recognizes medical emergencies and initiates appropriate intervention. Maintains basic life support certification and other mandatory training and educational requirements offered by the medical center. Attends interdisciplinary rounds and discharge planning meetings to assist with patient instruction/discharge planning for patients on designated team. Provides respectful care that maintains individuality, dignity and self-esteem for residents in an environment that focuses on their care needs and quality of life. Promotes rehabilitative and restorative nursing care.

United States Citizenship:

Highly Desired: Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant by a State and BLS certification is preferred

*In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of the candidates.

Qualifications for the GS-05
Must have
Experience: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (c) below;
or
Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below:

Demonstrated KSAs
1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new CNAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
