Summary:

This Physician-Dermatologist position is located at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The Dermatologist will provide consultation, both surgical and non-surgical, and follow up services for dermatology patients, in an inpatient and outpatient setting.

Duties

Help

Common duties of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Physician provides consultation, surgical and non-surgical, and follow up services for dermatology patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Primary duties include assessing, consulting, ordering appropriate diagnostic studies, performing surgical and non-surgical dermatology procedures, for treating patients with dermatological diseases who present for care at the facility.
  • Example dermatology testing procedures include: biopsies, including punch, shave, and excision biopsy; microbiological culture; skin allergy patch testing; Wood's lamp examination; cryotherapy; curettage; cyst excision; electrodesiccation; phototherapy; and skin tag removal, all examples of methods used to destruct, remove, or treat skin for a wide variety of diseases and conditions.
  • Physicians may be assigned duty as a supervising or collaborating physician for a mid-level provider. Physicians are expected to provide clinical oversight and review.
  • Your care team also includes many other physician and non-physician providers, i.e. clinical and pain management pharmacists, dieticians, laboratory and pathology staff and providers, clerical staff, and other medicine subspecialists and ancillary staff.

Work Schedule: Typically Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/01/2020.
Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Placement in this position is subject to meeting the physical requirements of the position. This includes: Walking (up to 2 hours); standing (up to 2 hours); Light and moderate lifting (up to 44 lbs.) light to moderate carrying (up to 44 lbs); straight pulling and pushing, reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and 20/100 in the other; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted).

All providers must maintain current BLS certification, and ACLS certification if indicated per medical center policies.

Education

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP): Authorized This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility criteria in accordance with VHA policy 1021 and apply for EDRP within four (4) months of appointment. Final award amount and program start date is determined after review of a complete EDRP application and supporting documentation by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. If selected for this position, please contact the facility EDRP Coordinator.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of 26 days per leave year (1 day per pay period).
