Duties

Help

As a Physicist (Nuclear Structure and Nuclear Astrophysics) you will

  • Serve as a Program Manager determining scientific focus and direction of the nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics aspects of the research program.
  • Organize, participate in, or lead committees composed of agency, interagency, and government personnel for the purpose of representing the DOE and programmatic interests.
  • Examine and ascertain pioneering research needs and opportunities of this research program against scientific and technological advances and of potential needs of the DOE.
  • Consult and negotiate with leading government and scientific personnel both nationally and internationally on sensitive issues and complex areas of importance to all involved parties.
  • Prepare, justify, and support the portions of the budget relating to the area of responsibility. Propose and implement adjustments to program during the budget approval process and unanticipated developments.
  • Evaluate contractor, DOE laboratory, and grantee research proposals and performance via own scientific and technical judgment, merit review, site visits and reviews, and panel reviews.
  • Develop and prepare analytical documents to communicate with top management of DOE and higher echelons of government on the status of programmatic phases and new developments and opportunities in the area of responsibility.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade GS 14 in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as:  Formulating and directing a research program in nuclear physics and its relationship to areas of related technologies including particle accelerators, nuclear physics detector instrumentation, data acquisition, and analysis computer systems; establishing research priorities and funding levels, reviewing scientific literature, and coordinating issues with the international scientific community; organizing, participating in, or leading committees for the purpose of representing an organization and; leading the development of experimental research in the field of nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics.

  1. Knowledge of the current state of a broad range of nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics that serves the core research programs supported by Division.
  2. Ability to develop methods and procedures and apply them to novel and unusual highly technical problems and developments for which there is little, if any, precedent.
  3. Knowledge of the current state of a broad range of nuclear physics and nuclear structure/nuclear astrophysics that serves the core research programs supported by Division.
  4. Ability to organize and direct diverse groups in the solving of highly complex scientific problems and to identify key synergisms/leverage points that will facilitate major scientific breakthroughs.

Education

EDUCATION:

This position has positive education requirements and transcripts must be provided prior to on-boarding if selected.

To qualify for the 1310 Series, applicants must possess:

(A) Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

OR

(B) Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, providing more than 40 percent of total funding for this vital area of national importance. It oversees and is the principal federal funding agency of the Nation's research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences.

The Office of Science manages fundamental research programs in basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, and computational science. In addition, the Office of Science is the Federal Government's largest single funder of materials and chemical sciences, and it supports unique and vital parts of U.S. research in climate change, geophysics, genomics, life sciences, and science education. The Office of Science manages this research portfolio through six interdisciplinary program offices: Advanced Scientific Computing Research, Basic Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental Research, Fusion Energy Sciences, High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics. The incumbent will serve as a recognized scientific authority and expert in nuclear physics and in the sub-field of nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics and, as such, has the responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in this field on a national and International level.
