Summary

This position is located in the Office of Communications (OC) at the National Air and Space Museum.  The Office of Communications plans, implements and coordinates marketing and communications programs.  The purpose of this position is to increase public awareness of the museum's activities and services; enhance the visibility of the museum and its mission; and increase attendance and generate revenue.

Duties

Help

  • Serves as the Museum's press manager and establishes and maintains effective working relationship with print and broadcast media representatives.
  • Develops and writes information materials designed to reach national audiences through the news media such as wire services, radio, television, newspaper, etc..

  • Manages communications efforts including communication planning for press and public, and internal audiences.
  • Established and maintains working relationship with print and broadcast media representatives in disseminating information or answering inquiries.

  • Sets up interviews and filming for media requests.
  • Initiates contact with news media representatives and informs them of the wide range of Museum’s activities.

  • Point of contact for filming requests including documentary, media (both live and taped) and major motion picture.

  • Supervises a staff of subordinate employees; approves leave, plans and organizes work, sets goals, assigns work deadlines, establishes priorities, establishes performance standards and prepares performance plans and ratings of subordinate staff; gives advice, counsel, or instruction to employees, develops and identifies training needs; and ensures equal employment opportunities (EEO) are afforded to all employees.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as developing and executing plans to increase public awareness of the museum's activities and services; enhance the visibility of the museum and its mission; increase attendance and generate revenue.  

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

MANDATORY: Ability to work with arts and culture media.

  • Ability to independently establish goals and execution plans for projects as assigned by director of communications.
  • Ability to work with Associate Director for External Affairs to make all needed management decisions in director's absence.
  • Ability to oversee communications for a complex, multi-year, large project.
  • Ability to act as media relations lead for a large-complex organization dealing with national and international media.
  • Ability to manage complex film shoots in coordination with all departments across a large-complex organization.
  • Sill in writing and editing media, advertising and marketing materials for print and broadcast.
