Summary

Duties

Help
  • Prepares, develops, and executes timber cruises and sample surveys for resource information and estimate quality and quantity of timber for purpose of appraisal, sales administration, management planning, and logging plans.
  • Lays outs sales in accordance with EAR and other instructions, considering variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements.
  • Gathers, compiles and recommends improvements for developed and dispersed recreation sites on the unit. Is the point of contact with community organizations and interest groups to generate interest in and utilization of forest recreation facilities.
  • Serves as inspector and contracting representative on contracts insuring work is completed. Inspect areas of concentrated public use, and special permits for compliance with the permit and management, public health regulations, and safety plans.
  • Conducts a variety of field studies of sensitive wildlife species to determine numbers, environmental conditions, and the condition of the species and its habitat, and factor affecting the health and welfare of the species and its habitat.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations for improvement of habitat or species. Data is collected in field locations, away from the unit. Develops plans to collect data, recording requirements, and factors to use for complete habitat and species analyses.
  • Participates in the development of plans and programs by collecting data for grazing allotment plans and advising management as to logical division of allotments into units, what improvements are needed, and what management practices can be affected.
  • Develops plans for the installation of range and soil condition and trend transects including clipping cages. Obtains required measurements, records information concerning forage density, production and types, soil depth, compaction and erosion.
  • Executes fuel treatment plans, slash hazard appraisals and hazard reduction plans. Records fuel treatment activity records for required reports and final project completion. Operates vehicles and equipment in support of fire suppression activities.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

For the GS-6 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5). Examples of specialized experience are: Execute timber cruises and sample surveys; assist in marking trees using and adapting complex marking rules; conduct assigned portions of surveys and studies of recreation trail areas; maintain existing recreation sites; monitor and maintain existing trails and facilities; perform a variety of field studies of sensitive wildlife species; collect data in field locations and prepares the data for extrapolation; execute fuel treatment plans; maintain fuel treatment activity records.

For the GS-7 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6). Examples of specialized experience are: Assisted with laying out sales in accordance with operational standards, guidelines and other instructions and points out variables such as accessibility, steep slopes, stream protection, nesting tree protection, wildlife and heritage impacts, fuels management and regeneration requirements; conducted assigned portions of surveys and studies of recreation trail areas, facilities and activities on a unit; monitored and maintained existing trails, facilities, etc. to ensure they are in operable condition; assisted with performing a variety of field studies of sensitive wildlife species to determine numbers, environmental conditions and the condition of the species and its habitats; executed fuel treatment plans, slash hazard appraisals and hazard reduction plans.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
