Summary

This position is located at the Southern Regional Office, in the Planning Unit of the Deputy Regional Forester for Natural Resources, located in Atlanta, Georgia.

This position is the point of contact for the American Indian Tribes having an interest in the activities of the Region and its Forests relative to the government-to-government trust responsibility.

Duties

Help
  • Perform as liaison between the federal government and federally recognized tribes
  • Provide training for internal staff on traditional American Indian customs and practices
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tribal customs and policies as they relate to activities affecting American Indian tribal rights or trust resources
  • Advise management of any procedural impediments which negatively impact the ability of the agency and its employees to effectively work with tribal governments
  • Coordinate and participate in interagency planning projects and planning activities, to ensure protection of American Indian rights, tribal rights and concerns
  • Provide tribes with economically and scientifically sound resource information, programs, and services

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-12 level: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, in the Federal service. Specialized experience must involve working with federally recognized tribes; communicating with tribal organizations; representing an agency/organization in public speaking and/or presentations; writing letters to tribal leaders; drafting agreements between an agency/organization and federally recognized tribes; working knowledge of federal laws, tribal-specific legislation, and treaties; program leadership, development, and implementation; demonstrated use of natural resource management knowledge to recommend policy or program adjustments; liaison and partnership development experience with federally recognized tribes; addressing American Indian issues and concerns; understanding of natural resource management, especially fire management, vegetation management, road and trail construction; coordinating and providing training to organization employees on traditional uses of wildlands, and cultural site protection and preservation; and working knowledge of issues which impact agency/organization relationships/partnerships with federally recognized tribes.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
