Summary

This position is located in the Office of the Academic Dean, United States Merchant  Marine  Academy, Maritime Administration (MARAD).

This position is established to (1) provide assistance in the planning and administration of the academic counseling program through oversight of the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and (2) attend to all other amenities that facilitate the learning environment and provide professional  development opportunities to instructors.

Duties

Help

As an Academic Counseling Specialist, you will:

  • Interpret and explain academic programs, standards and policies and counsel students with academic problems and assist them as required. Provide recommendations for program improvement.
  • Counsel and advise students who are having academic difficulties, creating plans for academic success. Monitor grades and ongoing progress of the students, and meet with faculty to discuss student progress, as required.
  • Provide guidance and support for students who are experiencing academic difficulty in mathematics, English/language arts/writing, science, history, and licensure. Assist in developing an academic remediation (Back on Track) plan for midshipmen to follow and provide ongoing support towards completion on plan.
  • Facilitate training/support and provide academic resources to help midshipmen on best practices for working with professors and other midshipmen to improve academic achievement Provide research‐based strategies to give students the necessary skills and knowledge to help them communicate effectively with professors, and members of the USMMA community in order to build a partnership which will have a positive impact on student achievement.
  • Collaborate with the professors, midshipmen, regimental staff, administrators, and the Director of the Academic Center of excellence to ascertain students’ academic needs and create a plan for improvement.

The ideal candidate for this position will be a professional with proven experience providing leadership and development of a comprehensive academic counseling program, which involves counseling and advisement to students who are having academic difficulties, creating plans for academic success, and acting as a liaison between students, faculty, and coaches to ensure students reach their full scholastic potential.

Qualifications

MANDATORY EDUCATION:

Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

OR

  1. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in above.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-9: on Education, you must have:

  • 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR master's or equivalent graduate degree

 
On Experience, you must have at least one year of equal or equivalent experience, it must include:

  • Experience assisting in the planning and administration of an academic counseling program, which includes the development of academic support programs that promotes academic excellence among students.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
