Duties

Help

As a Research Geologist within the Volcano Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: 

  • Serves as the principal investigator of volcanic eruption processes and history to interpret and forecast volcanic eruptions.
  • Maps volcanic deposits, applies stratigraphic principles, conducts laboratory analysis, and utilizes methods of Quaternary dating to conduct research.  
  • Studies volcanic processes and their derivative products using physical modeling, experiments, and basic physics to address questions of how processes associated with volcanism (like magma genesis and ascent) control eruption style, surface-flow phenomena and/or tephra dispersal.  Studies how these processes can be used to assess the timing and impact of volcanic hazards.
  • Conducts interdisciplinary research that incorporates results from other fields to better understand complex processes related to volcanism, especially those associated with explosive volcanism.
  • Disseminates results of research by publishing as a primary author in peer-reviewed scientific journals, presenting results at invited lectures, and leading sessions at professional meetings.
  • Field work may consist of hiking long distances (>10 miles) in areas with minimal or no established trails, camping for multiple nights in remote locations, making traverses across difficult terrain, carrying heavy loads including rock samples for extended distances and working in environments with extreme and often rapidly changing weather conditions that can vary from arctic to tropical.  Fieldwork may require working out of helicopters at unprepared mountain landing sites.

Qualifications

Qualifications BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:  In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed above, applicants must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level that is in or related to the duties described above, such as:   conducting research in volcanic processes or explosive volcanism such as pyroclastic flows and tephra dispersal. This experience is typically performed at the post-doctorate level.

This experience must have shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research.  The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science.  This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of research or providing the means of exploring the application of science in a major area.

--Basis of Rating: Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. 1.  Ability to formulate and conduct original field-based volcanological research projects on active volcanoes through mapping, detailed stratigraphic, sedimentologic, petrologic, and other geologic studies of volcanic deposits, with particular emphasis on stratovolcanoes like those found in the Cascade Range (include list of field-based investigations on volcanoes over the last five years in which you have been either project lead or a significant collaborator).


2.Ability to model volcanic processes and their derivative products using experiments, basic physics, and computer models to address questions of how processes associated with volcanism (e.g., magma genesis and ascent) control eruption style,  surface-flow phenomena (e.g., pyroclastic, debris, and lava flows), and/or tephra dispersal, and how these processes can be used to assess the timing and impact of volcanic hazards.


3.  Ability to conduct interdisciplinary research that incorporates results from other disciplines (e.g., physical chemistry, Quaternary geology, geochronology, atmospheric physics, fluid mechanics, grain-flow mechanics, seismology, geodesy, and/or remote sensing) to better understand complex processes related to volcanism, especially those associated with explosive volcanism.


4.  Ability to publish research in high impact scientific journals and show evidence of stature amongst professional colleagues (e.g., giving lectures to professional groups or universities, organizing workshops and/or sessions at professional meetings, and presenting results at international scientific meetings). Responses should include listings of peer-reviewed papers, presentations given at professional meetings, conferences, or seminars at research institutions (include oral or poster presentations and denote those that were invited), meeting sessions organized, and/or workshop participation.
