Duties for Physician (Preventionist), GP-602-14 include but not limited to:

  • Serves as the Center's senior clinical policy and practice advisor, providing advice to Center Directors in the development of clinical policies; assures a cohesive, integrated approach to the accomplishment of Center projects and programs and the execution of inter-Center activities. Provides technical assistance, clinical consultation and expertise to program staff, as well as SAMHSA/ CSAP leadership on substantive clinical matters.
  • Identifies and evaluates program needs and offers new or revised guidance based on knowledge of pertinent scientific and clinical literature as well as new information, and data from the substance abuse prevention field.
  • Recommends and collaborates on the development of new projects, and the continuation or revision of existing initiatives to ensure that current clinical knowledge and strategies are incorporated and included in their design, evaluation, and program implementation.
  • Coordinates development of briefings to the constituent, medical and/or clinical community.
  • Provides expert advice on clinical considerations and related matters that impact: program plans and goals; initiation, curtailment, consolidation, projects and programs; legislative proposals and communication interface with the senior members of medical, psychological, and other professional, family and consumer communities.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification Requirements:
Have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).]

Licensure
For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional Qualification Requirements:
In addition to meeting the Basic Qualification Requirements candidates must also: Have 4 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training; this equivalent experience is providing leadership and guidance on a full range of clinical issues impacting medically-related programs; coordinating with various health agencies, professional organizations, and other entities to establish criteria, standards and policies and regulations for a broad range of clinical issues impacting medically-related programs; developing, implementing and monitoring clinical policies addressing current and future issues and their impact on medically-related program measures; and interfacing with key officials within other public or private organizations that have a role in medically- related programs to seek input about planning processes, as well as, development of program goals.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through national Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to gain employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.

Education

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
