The incumbent:
Plays a critical role overseeing a program that produces 7–8 catalogs in print, plus all accompanying gallery labels, didactics, and online features related to the Gallery’s robust exhibitions program each year.
Oversees all editorial work for the program and edits catalogs and other exhibition-related materials as necessary. Assigns tasks to other editors within the Publishing Office, and hires freelance editors, proofreaders, translators, and indexers. Identifies and engages scholarly readers to report on draft manuscripts; formulates plans for revision with the authors based on readers’ reports. Oversees the preparation and application of style and formatting guidelines appropriate for each publication. Ensures a consistent house style in consultation with the Publisher/Editor in Chief and in collaboration with the Publishing Office’s other two managing editors.
Selects and negotiates agreements with outside authors, translators, copy editors, proofreaders, designers, indexers, and other freelancers. Drafts and implements grant applications and works with the Development Office as needed to secure funds for exhibition-related publishing projects; keeps funding agencies up to date with progress reports. Drafts the fiscal-year budgets for exhibition catalogs and works with the budget coordinator. Manages and oversees all exhibition publishing activities.
Reviews the master plan for the publishing program related to exhibitions based on changes in the field of art publishing, the applicability of new technologies, and the reception of new formats by the scholarly community and other target audiences. Establishes and maintains the program’s five-year plan.
Supervises three GS-1083 Technical Editors with a base level of non-supervisory work at the GS-11. Performs the full range of supervisory responsibilities.

Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.
Candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, editing print and digital publications on topics in the arts or humanities.
