-Serve as recognized authority on industrial chemicals, biological agents, and nanomaterials.
-Provide scientific expertise to develop, implement, and support the Division’s exposure and hazard assessment activities including absorption, disposition, metabolism, excretion (ADME) and adverse outcome pathways.
-Provide analyses of strategies and methodologies related to risk screening/assessment.
-Provide expertise for the collection and analysis of data; participate in the design and development of assessment methods, tools, databases and models.
-Develop briefing materials and reports; advise management on exposure assessment issues.
When entering a Federal job at a grade level lower than the highest promotion potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently, as your career progresses.
You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

Qualifications
You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
BIOLOGIST
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.
TOXICOLOGIST
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in toxicology, or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.
PHYSICAL SCIENTIST
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
CHEMIST
You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included the described coursework.

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as evaluating and organizing mechanistic information using the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework; experience reviewing hazard and/or exposure data that support human health, environmental hazard and/or risk characterizations; and experience evaluating absorption, disposition, metabolism, excretion (ADME) information to support chemical risk assessments (e.g., physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling).
To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as applying and integrating mechanistic information using the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework in human health and/or environmental risk assessments; experience developing screening level and complex human health hazard, environmental hazard and/or risk characterizations; and experience evaluating and integrating absorption, disposition, metabolism, excretion (ADME) information to support chemical risk assessments (e.g., physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling).
Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Skill in applying physical or biological science sufficient to review human and environmental data; 2) Ability to perform on multidisciplinary teams; 3) Skill in applying Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) regulations, policies, and requirements; 4) Ability to construct risk assessment tools and models; 5) Ability to plan, implement, and support risk assessment activities; 6) Ability to apply standard methodologies and other assessment tools to assess risk and develop new methods; 7) Skill in written communication; 8) Skill in oral communication.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
