Summary

The USDA, ARS, Plant Science Research Unit in St. Paul, Minnesota is seeking a Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Plants) to provide laboratory support for research designed to improve disease resistance and other agriculturally important traits in wheat and oats, using modern genetics and genomics tools and novel strategies including gene editing.

Duties

Help
  • Participating as a team member with the scientist in all phases of the research process and assuming full technical and operational responsibility for specific phases of the research.
  • Independently developing or designing various aspects of research projects on the basis of overall objectives outlined by the supervisor.
  • Performing highly complex techniques relevant to plant biological research, plant tissue culture, transformation, and genetics with unusual skill.
  • Planting, maintaining, and evaluating plants for disease resistance and other traits in the greenhouse or growth chamber.
  • Keeping exact, detailed records of experimental data. Tabulating, statistically analyzing, and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.
  • Interpreting and documenting findings by preparing information to be included in manuscripts or preparing reports summarizing progress or results of research.
  • Searching literature for new procedures or techniques to use in the laboratory, greenhouse, or field.
  • Ordering supplies and reagents needed to complete planned experiments, and keeping exact, detailed records of orders.
  • Maintaining inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, etc., for use in the laboratory or greenhouse, and safely disposing of waste (both chemical and biological).

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Qualifications:

GS-08: Applicants must have 1year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal Service OR 2 full years of directly related graduate education or a directly related master's degree (Directly related education includes: plant science, plant genetics, plant genomics, and plant molecular biology.) OR a combination of education and experience.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-08 level are:
* Performing techniques in a plant genetics research laboratory or greenhouse such as ­­DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, genetic analysis, and DNA sequence analysis;
* Operating and maintaining standard equipment used in a plant research laboratory such as thermocyclers and centrifuges;
* Maintaining inventory of chemicals, supplies, and plant genetic stocks for use in laboratory or greenhouse research; and
* Tabulating, statistically analyzing, and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.

GS-09: Applicants must have 1year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 grade level in the Federal Service OR 2 full years of directly related graduate education or a directly related master's degree (Directly related education includes: plant science, plant genetics, plant genomics, and plant molecular biology.) OR a combination of education and experience.

The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-09 level are:
* Performing complex techniques in a plant genetics research laboratory or greenhouse such as DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, genetic analysis, DNA sequence analysis, plant tissue culture and transformation, and gene cloning and characterization;
* Operating and maintaining equipment used in a plant research laboratory such as thermocyclers, centrifuges, and tissue grinders;
* Maintaining inventory of chemicals, supplies, and plant genetic stocks for use in laboratory or greenhouse research; and
* Tabulating, statistically analyzing, and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages, and employing plant genome databases to obtain information related to research.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
