Summary

As a Mathematical Statistician you will serve as the statistical expert for the Monitoring Unit, Centers for Epidemiology and Animal Health (CEAH). The Monitoring Unit has responsibility for the design, implementation, and analysis of the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS), and for designing studies to address the needs of emerging or emergency disease outbreaks.

Duties

Help
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides statistical expertise to personnel used for investigations, plans, survey designs, sampling procedures, collecting, and analyzing food animal disease statistical data
  • Oversees statistical activities of junior statisticians and epidemiologists
  • Responsible for statistical theoretical soundness, validity of results, interpretations, and efficiency
  • Develops modifications and/or adoption of different plans or procedures, as may be required
  • Serves as an expert consultant on statistical problems ? providing recommendations for the development and refinement general procedures developed for the statistical analysis of experimental data
  • Responsible for planning, initiating, directing, coordinating, and controlling statistical analysis and interpretation of NAHMS data and other epidemiologic studies
  • Reviews statistical phases of reports, publications, or other manuscripts for validity and technical correctness
  • Responsible for liaison activities with the National Agricultural Statistical Services as they relate to collaborative activities for NAHMS and other studies
  • Advises on the statistical and epidemiological validity of animal disease data and assumptions used in these analyses

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

Degree: that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

FOR THE GS-13 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-12 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Applying of principles, theories and methodologies of statistics related to the areas of epidemiology, study design, analysis and interpretation
  • Applying statistical methods in animal or public health using statistical and/or mathematical software for qualitative and quantitative analysis of animal health information related to disease prevalence, transmission and detection.
  • Serving as a statistician for a multidisciplinary team to develop animal- or human-health-related surveys or epidemiologic studies to determine disease prevalence, transmission and detection, leading quantitative and qualitative analysis of data collected and interpretation of results.
  • Conveying concise technical concepts, agency and program policy, direction and goals through verbal and written communication to a diverse audience including management.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

  • This position is eligible for telework within the local commuting area of the duty location of the position. Employee participation is at the discretion of the supervisor.
