Duties

Help
  • You will be responsible for all matters relating to the care and management of the museum?s archives, to include archive care and management, historic reference, research, and writing, and archival digitization.
  • You will assist the Deputy Director in the development of internal policies and procedures related to archival care and management.
  • You will provide overall management to the museum?s archival collection by performing registration and accessioning functions for accepted items.
  • You will research, identify and describe archival records following industry standards.
  • You will conduct research which encompasses the history of the United States Navy?s Enlisted Sailor and the history of the United States Navy in the American Midwest.
  • You will identify and prioritize rare and unique archival materials in the collection for digitization.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional archivist appraising, accessioning, arranging, describing, preserving, publishing and providing reference service from public records and historic documents. Specialized experience must demonstrate all of the following duties: 1) Registering and accessioning items of a museum's archival collection through inventory, analysis, arrangement and description of unorganized bodies of materials; 2) Recommending proper methods for storage, registry, preservation, and access of museum archival materials following established procedures set by the American Alliance of Museums and Society of American Archivists; 3) Researching a museum's archival collection utilizing a professional knowledge of history, and a thorough understanding of the needs, methods and techniques of scholarly historical research; 3) Digitizing archival materials by preparing, scanning, photographing, reformatting, creating metadata records, providing quality control on digitized images and metadata, and managing copyright and donor permissions; and 4) Communicating orally and in writing to a diverse audience as demonstrated by preparing and making historical presentations, participating in history conferences, and writing and publishing history articles.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government; OR have a combination of education and experience with at least 30 semester hours of courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Incumbent must be able to regularly bend, crouch, stretch, climb stairs and ladders and lift fifty pounds.

As the museum is located in a historic building eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, there is no elevator in the facility.

This position may require evening and weekend work.

This position is eligible for ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.

Exhibits and collections storage are located in several different buildings in the vicinity of Naval Station Great Lakes; this may require that the incumbent drive a government vehicle or personal vehicle among those buildings.
