Duties

Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Serves as liaison between the South and Central Asia Division, the News Center and the language services. Directs, coordinates and reviews on a daily basis the flow of reports, information, news tips and leads generated by the South and Central Asia Division and works with the News Center and Division management to ensure area coverage is unique, accurate, authoritative, comprehensive, balanced and fully conforms to the VOA Charter and journalistic code.
  2. In coordination with the Division Director and Managing Editor, responsible for the story development and production of complete original language service content.
  3. Distributes South and Central Asia Division's language services translation requests for original reporting that can be developed into stand-alone stories and released or used to supplement existing News Center stories.
  4. Exercises sound editorial judgment in producing stories on multimedia platforms. Provides editorial direction for selecting and approving subject matter to be covered.
  5. Reviews and evaluates source material and identifies items suitable for news, background and feature reports. Determines the appropriate emphasis to be given in an individual report based on knowledge of international news.
  6. Coordinates with the News Center Editors regarding incoming South and Central Asia Division stringer reports and original stories. Supplements and advances existing stories with original details.

Qualifications

Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level which is directly related to this line of work.

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as demonstration of the following: (1) Knowledge of journalism and digital publishing principles and methods by writing, editing and producing integrated, well-balanced, unique and highly-targeted content; (2) Exercising sound editorial judgment; and (3) Working under deadline pressure and improvising solutions.
