Duties

Help
  • You will assist in the planning and execution of educational and research activities in the Oceanography Department.
  • You will collect physical and acoustic oceanographic data and perform reduction, analysis and modeling of this data in support of on-going research and instructional activities.
  • You will support student and faculty programming needs and lead classroom activities.
  • You will manage the Oceanography Department's Moored Experiment Laboratory (MEL) with responsibility for designing, developing, and testing oceanographic systems and subsystems, including sensor selection and mechanical configuration.
  • You will perform technical leadership roles in both instructional and research at-sea cruises (deck boss, watch chief and team leader) and for in-house laboratory activities.
  • You will be responsible for deploying and recovering oceanographic systems and subsystems.

Qualifications

For the GS-11 level: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Planning, preparing and executing collaborative oceanographic field experiments and data collection; 2) Supporting computer programming needs for oceanographic data analysis and modeling; 3) Fabricating, deploying and recovering oceanographic and acoustic moorings; 4) Maintaining, operating and calibrating oceanographic instrumentation; 5) Participating in instructional and research at sea cruises as a deck boss, watch stander, scientist and watch chief.

For the GS-09 level: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Planning, preparing and executing oceanographic field experiments and data collection; 2) Performing data analysis and modeling of physical oceanographic data; 3) Keeping organized records of performance, testing, calibration and maintenance of oceanographic instrumentation; 4) Participating in instructional and research at sea cruises as a deck boss or watch stander.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must have A. Degree with a major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences; OR B. A combination of education and experience which includes course work as shown in A above in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Applicants who qualify on the basis of major study in biology or geology must have had at least 6 semester hours in the major directly concerned with marine science or 6 semester hours in oceanography; applicants who qualify on the basis of other physical sciences or engineering must have had differential and integral calculus and at least 6 semester hours in physics.

Completion of graduate education providing the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:

For the GS-11 level: Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR a combination of specialized experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent.

For the GS-09 level: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree OR a Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR a combination of specialized experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience must equal one hundred percent.

Additional information

The physical demands of this position vary broadly from inconsequential to strenuous. Work involves standing and sitting with some bending, stooping, walking, lifting and carrying. You must be physically and emotionally capable of working independently and closely with the supervisor, other staff and faculty, and with students. The work is generally performed in an office, laboratory or warehouse setting, or aboard research vessels.

Term appointments may be extended up to 8 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations. Additionally, you may be noncompetitively converted to a permanent career-conditional or career appointment under specific conditions.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

This position is eligible for situational telework at the discretion of management.
