Summary

The Robley Rex VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Louisville, Kentucky is seeking a board-certified physician to serve as the Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) under the supervision of the Chief of Staff. The DCOS functions as a member of the leadership team serving as principal assistant to the Chief of Staff in clinical, administrative, and performance matters.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am. - 4:30 pm

Louisville is a growing city of 1.5 million people located on the beautiful Ohio river. It offers the shopping and amenities of many larger cities, but with very affordable housing, lower traffic congestion, and access to numerous areas of natural beauty. It has an abundance of golf courses (including the PGA Valhalla Golf Course), as well as, numerous parks, bike paths, and local hiking. Due to its geographical location is also offers many great day-trips with easy drives to Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Nashville and St. Louis.

The DCOS takes an active role in coordinating and integrating clinical and support programs to meet the needs of veterans; ensuring medical staff compliance with regulations, medical staff bylaws, facility policies, Joint Commission standards, performance measures and other appropriate regulations; developing and monitoring quality improvement measures for process improvement; evaluating clinical workload and resources for existing and program requirements; conducting cost/benefit analyses regarding new services and program expansions; providing advice and counsel in defining and accomplishing the facility's mission and goals; establishing policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure continuous comprehensive services; and developing and maintaining a good working relationship with the affiliated medical school.

The DCOS will take an active role in the journey of becoming a high reliability organization. As an integral member of the leadership team, the DCOS will be committed to a goal of zero harm, a fully functioning culture of safety throughout the organization, and the widespread deployment of highly effective process improvements tools.

The DCOS will chair and serve on various committees, workgroups, and task forces at the facility and/or VISN level. In the absence of the Chief of Staff, will act in his/her capacity.

Applicants must possess a broad knowledge and understanding of healthcare policies, missions, and operating programs, knowledge of healthcare management, and the principles of high reliability organizations. Key qualities include leadership, strategic planning, teamwork building, quality improvement, and credentialing and privileging. The ideal candidate will have a record of clinical, academic, research, and administrative experience fostering inter-institutional relationships in an academic setting along with proven managerial skills in a health care environment.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2019.
Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:
  • Board Certification, VA management experience

Physical Requirements: Work is sedentary requiring some walking and standing. Work includes use of computer terminals and occasional carrying of materials which does not exceed twenty-five pounds total weight.
