Duties

Help

As an Interdisciplinary Geographer/Geologist/Civil Engineer (Geotechnical) within the Natural Hazards Mission Area, Landslide Hazards Program, some of your specific duties will include:

Independently or by leading ad-hoc investigative scientific and/or technical teams, provide remote, rapid hazard identification and assessments from remotely sensed and other (e.g. social media) information.


Lead scientific and technical teams providing technical assistance and capacity building to partner agencies abroad and organize scientific and risk reduction exchange between USGS and partner agencies abroad.


Develop work plans and protocols, which include consideration of previous scientific analyses, evaluation of all available data from a range of sources, development and adaptation of procedures and methods of investigation, and diplomatic sensitivities.


Support Landslide Hazard Program efforts to identify, assess, and communicate landslide hazard and risk by assisting with organization of workshops, meetings, and other activities.


Analyze applicability of datasets, products, and capabilities to assist, complement, and inform risk reduction efforts by partner agencies abroad. Assist with the identification of needs and determination of the nature, scope, and approach for initiating landslide hazard and risk assessments that most effectively address those needs.

Fieldwork may expose incumbent to potentially dangerous situations and exposure to moderate discomfort from extremes such as heat, cold, and inclement weather, and stressful social situations, particularly on trips in response to natural hazard crises and events.

If qualifying as a Geographer based on specialized experience, you must possess 1-year equivalent to the next lower grade level as described below: 

GS-11:  Examples of experience may include: 1) locating, examining, evaluating and selecting, from a variety of source materials, information for use in depicting the location and standardizing the nomenclature of physical and humane features on a map, chart or in a gazetteer; 2) determining the distribution of like phenomena (e.g., deciduous vegetation or precipitation) over Eastern U.S., or comparing the distribution of two or three different kinds of phenomena, e.g., deciduous vegetation and precipitation; 3) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained studies.

GS-12:  Examples of experience may include: 1) assembling information concerning the location and nomenclature of physical and cultural phenomena covering an area the size of Canada, and making determinations in the more difficult cases regarding location and nomenclature to appear on a map, etc. to insure standardization of such information; 2) compiling and synthesizing geographic data to show and compare the distribution of various features and events; 3) performing analytic and interpretive work concerned with determining and explaining the interrelationships existing between or among two or three varieties of phenomena.

GS-13:  Examples of experience may include: 1) serving as a recognized expert on the location and nomenclature of all physical and human features regarded as significant for navigational, intelligence, logistic and general geographical use; 2) responsibility for a comprehensive descriptive study of significant geographical aspects of a major nation state, e.g. Brazil, involving the bringing together of numerous available facts and their presentation; 3) publication of papers dealing with problems, findings, or determinations which are recognized as having considerable significance in the field; 4) performing analytical and interpretive assignments of considerable significance and complexity; 5) designing and creating GIS databases.

If qualifying as a Geologist based on specialized experience, you must possess 1-year equivalent to the next lower grade level as described below: 

GS-11:  Examples of experience may include: independent responsibility for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of routine geologic work. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work.

GS-12:  Examples of experience may include: planning and executing complex geologic studies, which usually involved intensive investigations into recognized phenomena. This work typically involved conventional methods & techniques though it required going beyond clear precedents and required adapting methods to the problems at hand and interpreting findings in terms of their scientific significance.

GS-13:  Examples of experience may include: planning, executing and reporting on original geologic studies or ongoing geologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable.

If qualifying as a Civil Engineer based on specialized experience, you must possess 1-year equivalent to the next lower grade level as described below: 

GS-11:  Examples of experience may include: (1) conducting preliminary site investigations to obtain field data on such things as existing structures, drainage areas, topography, and feasible layout of facilities in relation to terrain; (2) preparing design criteria for smaller or less complex portions of facilities; (3) developing technical data for formal specifications regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, quantities and costs; (4) designing and constructing hydrologic measuring structures.

GS-12:  Examples of experience may include: (1) preparing designs for structures appurtenant to flood control channels (diversion structures, high retaining walls, closed box channels, simple bridges); (2) developing competitive bidding cost estimates for a variety of civil works projects of multiple-use nature, or military construction projects in different geographic locations, with different climatic conditions and land characteristics; (3) preparing the preliminary, or planning, design and estimate for single-purpose buildings; (4) reconnoitering proposed routes and recommending final route selection for railroads or highways through public lands areas by field or aerial surveys; (5) utilizing given radiological safety criteria, preparing detailed designs for containers and facilities for shipping, handling, storage and disposal of radioactive materials; (6) preparing designs and specifications setting forth required capacity, size, location and materials and methods to be used in building varied roads, streets and allied structures in parks and recreational areas.

GS-13:  Examples of experience may include: Not only well-versed in standard theory and practices in the field, but also possessing further experience and know-how demonstrating the capability to identify and define the nature and scope of difficult problems, and to identify lines of inquiry and derive criteria from inconclusive or sparse data; engages in exhaustive search and intensive study of approaches applied and results obtained, the findings of research and study of related problems, and other similar sources of information; extends or modifies existing criteria or techniques or develops new approaches to the solution of problems; and may develop prototypes, models or other testing criteria and methods to test or validate design assumptions and approaches. Some examples are: (1) individual work on advanced planning or design problems; (2) responsibility for coordinating or monitoring planning and design work that is largely conventional in nature, but which encompasses a number of components or obscure problems; (3) responsibility for coordinating or monitoring planning and design work that is largely conventional in nature, but which encompasses a number of components or phases of project work.
