Full Time, Excepted Service appointment with an Initial Term Not-To-Exceed 13 months; however, each year with a satisfactory performance appraisal, the appointment may be extended for an additional year.
As a Director of Physical Education and Athletics, you will:
Be responsible developing and recommending educational policies; analyzing and evaluating educational data, practices, and trends; developing and evaluating physical education curricula; preparing and evaluating schedules; and otherwise planning and directing the work of the department; including responsibility to ensure departmental course offerings, instructional programs, student programs, and other activities are up-to-date, properly scheduled, effectively taught, supported with necessary equipment and services, and periodically reviewed and evaluated.
Be responsible for overall management, administration, and supervisory authority to direct, coordinate, and oversee the work of subordinates, with responsibility for supervising, planning, and coordination the day-to-day operations of staff.
Be responsible for the development and conduct of educational courses and programs, research, instruction and academic counseling of Midshipmen, and assuming a share of other academic responsibilities.
The ideal candidate will have advanced graduate degrees in both physical education (or similar related field) and higher education administration (or related field); and more than ten (10) years of professional experience in accredited institutions of higher education that includes progressively increasing responsibilities as a supervisor and manager in a physical education and/or athletics department program. This experience should also include teaching physical education courses (at least at the undergraduate level); supervising coaches and faculty members (including responsibility for hiring, performance management, time and attendance, disciplinary actions, etc.); management of a departmental budget with multiple income and spending streams; experience recruiting student athletes in support of ensuring a diverse and highly successful student body; and working with members of the institutional departments, alumni, donors, and external organizations to support the institutional mission of the organization.

The person selected for this position may be eligible to reside on the Academy grounds in assigned campus housing and pay a monthly housing rental fee, if availably.
Qualifications
To be qualified for this position, you must meet the education requirements and have experience teaching college level classes in the required field of study.
To qualify for a Director of Physical Education & Athletic you must possess at least 5 years of relevant physical education and athletic teaching experience and/or coaching extra-curricular competitive sports at a higher education institution. AND at least 1 year of appropriate physical education and athletic program supervisory experience (department head or equivalent), establishing good working rapport with subordinate staff, as well as other internal and external stakeholders, as a contributing member of a higher (or adult) educational institutional management team. AND at least 1 year of experience in a position of higher education administration or supervision (or other similar related experience), which demonstrates the ability to develop or recommend education policies; analyze and evaluate education date, practices and trends, develop and evaluate curricula, prepare and evaluate instructional materials and teaching aids; plans student and faculty schedules; plan or conduct scholarly research; and plan and direct the work of a physical education or athletics department in an institution or adult level education.
Education
The educational requirement for this position includes a minimum of a Master's Degree in an appropriate discipline (such as Physical Education, higher Education Administration, Sports Management, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, etc.).
NOTE: In exceptional cases a Master's degree in an unrelated field combined with professional experience at a level of complexity and responsibility equal to this position and documented professional training, which demonstrates the possession of equivalent knowledge , skills, and abilities, may be considered for a substitution of the required Master's degree in a related field, on a case by case basis.
