Duties

Help

As a Microbiologist (Inspector) you will:

  • Conduct regulatory on-site inspections/assessments of Federal, State, academic and private laboratories at biosafety levels 2, 3, and 4 to ensure compliance with federal regulatory requirements.
  • Include data analysis and management concepts to include a basic knowledge of principles and techniques related to the analysis, presentation, and exchange of data.
  • Communicate with a variety of lab/organizations in the scientific community.
  • Assess and develop materials designed to communicate to the scientific community.
  • Facilitate the registration and changes to the registration of entities that possess, use, and transfer select agents and toxins.
  • Prepare written reports of inspection findings.
  • Coordinate regulatory requirements with other federal agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:
A. Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent from an accredited college and/or university.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Qualifications:
GS-9: In addition to meeting the basic education requirements listed above, applicants must have (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service to include experience in microbiological and/or biomedical laboratories identifying, interpreting and applying established approaches and solutions to microbiological tests.
OR
Have completed a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level education leading to such a degree in microbiology, or specific area of study such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, algology, protozoology, parasitology, immunology, serology, microbial genetics, or soil microbiology; or specific applied fields of microbiology such as clinical and public health microbiology, food technology, production processes, industrial fermentation, pollution, etc. Graduate study in related fields such as experimental pathology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, biochemistry, animal or plant physiology, genetics, plant pathology, and insect disease control, may also be pertinent, provided it has direct application to microbiological work or LL.B. or J.D.ORHave combination of experience and education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.

GS-11: In addition to meeting the basic education requirements listed above, applicants must have (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service to include experience in reviewing and analyzing laboratory programs and clinical laboratory tests; originating, inspecting, and identifying laboratory safety and establishing biosafety approaches that impact public health matters.
OR
Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education or the successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in microbiology, or specific area of study such as bacteriology, virology, mycology, algology, protozoology, parasitology, immunology, serology, microbial genetics, or soil microbiology; or specific applied fields of microbiology such as clinical and public health microbiology, food technology, production processes, industrial fermentation, pollution, etc. Graduate study in related fields such as experimental pathology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, biochemistry, animal or plant physiology, genetics, plant pathology, and insect disease control, may also be pertinent, provided it has direct application to microbiological work.
OR
Have combination of experience and education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.
