Duties

Help

As a GEOPHYSICIST within the GEOLOGY, GEOPHYSICS, AND GEOCHEMISTRY SCIENCE CENTER, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Lead and assists in the acquisition of all types of geophysical field data.
  • Uses existing and newly developed methods to analyze seismic, electrical resistivity, surface and airborne electromagnetic, surface and airborne magnetic, magnetotelluric, and other geophysical data to extract subsurface information.
  • Applies established procedures and existing computer programs and helps to develop new techniques to process field data.
  • Collaborates in the development of a realistic and reasonable geological model of areas of investigation based on geophysical data, core log analysis, and other available information.
  • Prepares illustrative materials for talks and reports, and authors or co-authors written reports on results of investigations for publication and presentation at professional conferences.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  In the field, work includes hiking in rough terrain with equipment, reeling wire, lifting objects weighing up to 40 pounds, and operating delicate geophysical instruments. Office work involves some standing and walking, but it mostly sedentary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  When in the field, incumbent is exposed to inclement weather and dangers associated with falls, snakes, wild or uncontrolled animals, stinging insects, and traveling in vehicles both on unimproved roads and in heavy traffic. Most work is in an atmosphere-controlled office environment.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.). **OR

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

In addition to the basic education requirements of a GS-12 GEOPHYSICIST:  Applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service.  Such positions generally require completion of a doctorate degree in geophysics or geological sciences, or the equivalent knowledge from experience.

Examples of such experience include designing and executing complex geophysical field surveys involving multiple spatial scales, geophysical methods, and project phases; analyzing, synthesizing and interpreting ground and airborne geophysical data sets; presenting and publishing technical scientific reports. The individual has experience leading and organizing field campaigns and can demonstrate problem-solving and organizational experience applied to geophysical survey design and data acquisition. The individual has experience with high-level problem-solving and organizational experience applied to the geophysical data processing workflows. The individual has authored and published multiple reports documenting data analysis and interpretation and has experience communicating results at scientific conferences and to the general public. This work will have required the use of non-conventional methods and techniques, going beyond clear precedents, adapting methods to the problem at hand, and interpreting the findings in terms of their scientific significance. At this level, Geophysicists have excellent knowledge of geophysical principles for a variety of techniques and applications. At this level, Geophysicists have the ability to independently perform scientific work of considerable difficulty, represent the USGS at meetings, and provide technical advice to other project personnel with regard to complex problems.
