  • The work may require the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license may be required for the position.

  • Required to walk two flights of stairs carrying boxes of documents weighing up to 15 pounds.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this Archivist, GS-1420-12, you must meet one of the BASIC Qualification Requirement Options *AND* meet the ADDITIONAL Qualification Requirement.

BASIC Qualification Requirement for the 1420 Series:
Option A: You have a Bachelor's degree in Archival Science or a Bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.
*OR*
Option B: You have a combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included course work as stated in item A., plus appropriate professional experience related to this position. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position, and be comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in one of the fields in item A. For this position, the professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts.

ADDITIONAL Qualification Requirement:
You have at least one year of specialized experience performing the professional duties of an Archivist. This experience included: (1) Scanning and organizing extensive paper and microfilm material into a single electronic historical archive; (2) Applying professional standards to ensure the collection, accession, and/or archive of historically significant materials meets those requirements; (3) Implementing effective operations of an archival collection based on a comprehensive understanding of the collection's arrangement and content; and (4) Conducting research in organizational histories, records, and other primary or secondary sources. This specialized experience must be at least one year equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service.

Part time or unpaid experience: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

Volunteer work experience: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

TRANSCRIPTS: To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of unofficial or official transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), type of degree awarded (if applicable) and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you can begin work.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Term Appointments: If you are selected for a term position, your appointment may be extended to the maximum period of six years allowed by law without further competition. This position may be converted to career or career-conditional without further competition upon management's discretion. Term employees are eligible for health and life insurance, are covered under the Federal Retirement System, and are eligible to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan. Current federal civilian employees may apply for term positions and if selected, a break in service of at least 4 calendar days may be required prior to appointment to the position.
