This position is located within the Engineering Section of the Geotechnical Branch of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District in Concord, MA.

The incumbent serves as the principal advisor and consultant to the Chief, Geotechnical Engineer Section on geotechnical engineering matters.

Duties

Help
  • Assignments contain a combination of complex features which frequently involve significant or difficult-to-resolve technical problems and conflicts. You will perform the following duties:
  • Provide staff guidance on dam safety related items such as the design, construction stability and safety of new and existing dams.
  • Design analysis and engineering management for flood control projects.
  • Review technical design documents for accuracy.
  • Work with other divisions to resolve conflicts or delays to the timely completion of work.
  • Perform field inspections of proposed and existing project sites.
  • Maintain liaison with key representatives of the District to propose and recommend solutions to issues that arise.
  • Initiate and direct geotechnical investigations.
  • Serves as the District specialist in geotechnical engineering, design repair/rehab and construction of major earth and rock-fill dams.
  • Perform complex probability and reliability analyses for major dam rehabilitation projects.
  • Serve as a consultant on complex geotechnical problems to other agencies.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for the Civil Engineering (Geotechnical), 0810 Series:

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience Required:

GS-13:
One year of specialized experience which includes meeting all of the following: 1) Perform geotechnical design analysis for projects on flood control; 2) perform field inspections on projects under construction to determine if changes to the design are needed; 3) provide geotechnical advice on engineering designs to stakeholders, such as junior engineers, representatives from internal and external federal agencies; and 4) perform analytical studies for such problems as stability of flood walls and slopes; settlement and bearing capacity of foundation systems; control of seepage by berms, drainage systems and relief wells; and earth retaining structures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12) or equivalent grade level.

Selective Placement Factor:

This position requires the following: (a) current state issued Professional Engineering Registration (P.E.). You must include a copy of your current (not just the initial Registration) Engineering with your application package. If you fail to provide a copy of your current state issued Engineering registration, your application packet will be found incomplete.

Education
