The incumbent for this Program Director position will work primarily in the Advancing Informal STEM Learning (AISL) program. AISL supports innovative research, evaluation, and practice across informal learning settings in any age group. This includes the development of theory, methods, measurement, innovation, and capacity building in informal STEM learning environments. A major goal of the program is to enhance the science and practice of broadening participation in STEM in informal learning environments. AISL supports research and development across the full domain of informal STEM learning. The incumbent will be expected to provide leadership to the AISL team in all aspects of the work.

NSF Program Directors have an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to ensure NSF funded activities are at the forefront of advancing fundamental knowledge. In support of that, Program Directors are responsible for extensive interaction with informal and formal educational organizations, academic and industry research communities, as well as interaction with other Federal agencies that may lead to development of interagency collaborations. Within this context, Program Directors solicit, receive, and review proposals; make funding recommendations; administer awards; and undertake interaction with research communities in these fields. They are also responsible for service to the Foundation-wide activities and initiatives that together accomplish NSF’s strategic goals to:

1) Transform the Frontiers of Science and Engineering

2) Stimulate Innovation and Address Societal Needs through Research and Education

3) Excel as a Federal Science Agency.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in an appropriate field, plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.

This position is outside the competitive civil service.

  1. Demonstrated leadership and contributions to research or evaluation, or to practice in STEM learning in informal settings, including experience in conceptualizing, researching, or implementing innovative approaches.
  2. Knowledge of the broad range of issues, challenges, and opportunities in the informal STEM learning field.
  3. Experience in providing strategic leadership and management of a diverse team to define and achieve programmatic goals, especially considering resource constraints.
  4. Research, analytical, and/or technical writing expertise as evidence by publications, presentations or other documents.
  5. Ability to interact with the scientific and education community and peers, and to advance program policies and plans.
  6. Ability to lead a team in the review of proposals, articles or other documents related to research and development on STEM learning in informal settings.
